Laboratory Safety Rules

1) Wear chemical splash goggles during experiments involving caustic / corrosive chemicals and / or hot liquids.

2)  Do not eat, drink or chew gum in the laboratory AND never taste anything in the lab.

3)  Do not remove chemicals from the laboratory.

4)  Do only the experiments assigned and in the manner prescribed.

5)  Avoid inhaling chemical fumes.  To smell a chemical, wave the vapors toward you with your hand.

6)  Consider all chemicals dangerous unless they are known to be otherwise.  Handle them with care.

7)  Notify the teacher immediately in the case of an accident, even if it appears trivial.

8)  Know the location and proper use of the fire extinguisher, fire blanket, eye wash, safety shower and first aid kit.

9)  Do not use the sink to discard solid trash, such as matches, filter or litmus paper, insoluble solids / metals.

10)  Do not return unused chemicals to their original containers, unless told to do so by your instructor.

11)  Report spills immediately to your instructor.

12)  Tie back long hair and avoid wearing loose flowing clothing.  Never lean over or reach over a burner.

13)  Be sure your work area and glassware are clean before leaving the lab.

14)  Be sure all gas jets, water faucets and electrical connections are turned off before leaving the lab.

15)  Follow all specific safety instructions given by your instructor, verbal and written.
